Well I read Mique's post last night and I felt bad for being such a whiner. I woke up today with a much better attitude about all of this business. I have a friend who is trying to get back into working out so we decided we would switch babies to go to the gym Mon, Wed and Fridays. That will let me do a little weight lifting and cross training and justify my monthly gym dues to hubby. It will also give me one day on the treadmill to work on my pace.
I was worried about getting bored on the treadmill today and I was nervous since I'd had such a hard time last week. I usually just run on "manual" on the treadmill but I decided to get crazy today and chose "random" so the incline would randomly increase or decrease over time. I only put it on level "3" though so I never went on a very high incline and that was fine by me. I decided my goal was to try to stay in the 11 min mile range and never go below 12 min miles. I also decided that to head off the dreaded 30 min turn off on the treadmill I would re-start it after 2 miles. I felt great today! I tried to do what they call "reverse splits" that is where you run slower at the beginning and pick it up at the end. I ran slower at first and then when I restarted at the 2 mile mark I tried to pick up the pace. I ran as fast as 10:30 min miles and as slow as 12 but I did stay mostly in the 11:30 range. I think I finished in 46 min which I thought was pretty good. My ipod time was even less but I am wondering if I didn't start it right away or something.
I didn't sing out loud (there were quite a few people in the gym) but I did plenty of head bopping, air drumming and mouthing the words with a lot of passion. I kind of feel like the old man on the treadmill next to me was staying on his just to watch me because he got off right after I did. Oh well, if I can provide someone's entertainment for the day that's great!
It is interesting that you don't like the miles thing Jessica because I personally love it! I hated getting to the last five minutes of my run and know that even if I sprinted all the way home I would still not be done! When I got to the last .2 miles today I cranked that treadmill up as fast as I could stand it! I ran the last mile the fastest, I LOVE that if I run faster I can just be done!
Now I just have to figure out how to measure my miles on the trail so I will know how far I go with the jogger. I really want one of these but I am not sure I can justify the cost. I really just need to get that dang GPS watch working. Here's to a better week for everyone!

Heartbeat...

Today was heinous. I will powered my way through and am so glad to be done. I did my 4 mile hill-fest. I forgot to time myself again - must get sportwatch. I left around noon, and had only had a banana and a cookie all day, and not much water. Obviously poor planning on my part! I was going to go this morning, but since it sounded like my house was going to blow away while I was laying in bed (man, those Santa Anas!), I chickened out and waited. About an hour and a half ago my husband (who often works from home) said go now or else I had to wait til tonight, so I just went. The sun was beating down on me and I think the wind was against me going both directions, is that possible?
Anyway, I know I'm a big whiner, but I'm actually laughing while I type this. I was so tired it was comical, I was laughing that kind of haha/crazy/psycho laugh. The highlight, or maybe lowlight, was the music. I think it was Brooke who was getting annoyed a few weeks ago when her baby's lullaby music kept popping up. That was totally me today, except with Christmas music and kids's music. I forwarded through so many songs. My 3yr. old's batman song is just not gonna get me up that hill.
The best part? I had just made it to the top of the toughest hill and the song ended and I was wondering what champion song would come on to power me through...so I was huffing and puffing and waiting...and I kept thinking, oh my gosh, my heart is going to pound out of my chest!...and I kept waiting...and I finally looked to see if my iPod was stuck...and it was on a song from a lullaby CD that is only a baby's heartbeat! I was laughing and running and probably looked like a crazy person. Ohhhhhhhhhhh, I need to go drink some water, I'm a little scared of myself right now.
a little too ambitious for a monday...
usually on mondays i go to the gym because i find it is the best way to ease back into running for the week. this morning i was feeling a little ambitious however (maybe it was the 2, count em, TWO compliments i got yesterday at church about my post pregnancy figure...yay!!) since i haven't run with the stroller in over a week, i thought i'd give it a go again, and since clint's truck is dead again (don't even ask) he took my car and i had to start from home (remember how i am surrounded by hills???) so- off on a 4 mile adventure we went: lots of hills, pants that kept falling off, hot sun making me dehydrate a little to quick, crying baby, lost of hills, headache, a little bit of walking, did i mention lots of hills?? we did manage to survive, and ran 4 miles in about 52 min. the last hill was the big one that goes up to my house, and i walked up that one making it a total of 4.6 miles and 66 minutes.
is it just me, or do you like running for minutes better than for miles?? now i have to run fast to get done quicker! before i could just run at whatever pace i felt like and would get done in the same amount of time. i guess there will be some adjusting to deal with.
this week may get a little tricky since we will be gone on saturday (more on that later) so i may have to figure out where to squeeze in an extra 5 miles.
by the way - i invited a new runner to join us and she may start to post. welcome kasey!
ok, happy monday everyone.

My excuse
I feel bad for you all with your big full boobs, runny noses and no sleep (really I do). But I just have to pipe in here and say at least you can go.
As Jess and Kristen already know, I went to the doctor on Thurs. And after over 2 hours for a 10 min. thing, the xrays showed my toe is still broken. The doc told me I have at least 2 more weeks to heal but maybe 4.
I guess it's silly that I am dying to run. But I am. Josh even told me this week that I need to get back out there because when I was running I was happier!?! Huh?
I'm really bummed because I know that a non-runner like myself doesn't have a shot in H-E-double hockey sticks of running the race if I don't get back in the saddle soon. Kristen even said, "There are always other 1/2 marathons, this isn't in the only one." I yelled at her. I didn't even want to think about it. But the truth is, I'm losing my hope and fear that indeed I might not be there in my cute running skirt begging to be taken away on a stretcher. I might have to be on the sidelines. NO NO NO NO NO. Just writing that makes me want to puke. I've never been a quiter. I don't want to start now.
So think of me while you're aching, sweaty and looking sexy in those running clothes slurping down the GU. I wish I could be with you.

Excuses, excuses...
So I guess this just isn't my week! I got pretty much ZERO sleep last night and as I got up for the 50 millionth time I thought, there is NO way I can run tomorrow. Just no way. So I didn't. I gave Aaron the baby sometime in the morning and went back to bed. I knew that I either needed to go with the stroller later or wait for Aaron to get home. But boy was I full of excuses today! I got no sleep, it was too cold to take the baby out (59 degrees?), I have an ingrown toenail (shut up! it hurts!).
Well around 3 when Aaron was on his way home, the guilt set in. I couldn't skip a Saturday run! I promised after my bad week in Utah that I wouldn't slack any more! What would I post about!? So I decided to put my running clothes on before Aaron got home so I would have no choice. Since the baby was asleep and I hate running with full boobs, I decided to pump. So this might be TMI if you aren't a lactating mom but since I know at least one of you is, I couldn't get a let down! That has never happened to me! I pumped and pumped and pumped for like 10 min but I was getting NOTHING. I did not want to run with full boobs and I really felt like this was the last straw, I should just give up and put my sweats back on. But my running hoodie stunk. So now I stunk. If i was going to have to take a shower anyway, I might as well run. I made a deal with myself. Just get out there and do 3 miles. That was the original run for this day, I am the one who changed it to 5 so just get out there and do 3 and you can at least say you did that much. So I FINALLY got some milk out of these udders of mine and headed out the door. I was too lazy to figure out a route and since I recently discovered that our circle around the condos is pretty much exactly .5 miles I just started running circles. At almost 3 miles the dog quit on me. I decided I wasn't quite ready to quit so I ran her home, threw her in the door and told Aaron to take her and I went out and did two more laps. That was my compromise. Four miles. Not what I planned but more than what I had bargained with myself for. It hurt. It did not feel good. My toe hurts. I feel like a big whiner. Can someone please tell me how to make my baby's teeth stop hurting? I need to get some sleep!!
Sorry that this post is a downer! At least I got out there!!

my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard...
this song made me actually laugh out loud on this morning's run for several reasons.
1) because of the non-runners marathon book i read - her radio was stuck on this song for the last half of her marathon and tortured her the rest of the way
2) because of this movie
the rest of this movie was pretty lame, but clint and i laughed soooo hard in this opening sequence. really disgusting, but soooo funny.
3) any lactating mom who runs will know that this song was totally meant for us. brings a whole new meaning to that "milkshake".
anyhow- run went well this morning. ran exactly 5 miles in about 55 min. weather was perfect running weather - a little gloomy and overcast, but not too cold. perfect. i tried a new route - headed out to torrey pines state beach and back. it was nice because it was almost all flat, but i don't love running on busy roads, so that was kind of a bummer. i also hate trying out new places on my long days because it is so hard to know what to expect. i tried gu and managed to somehow gag down that crazy texture and just like the beans, i didn't notice a huge difference. i did half 10 min before i left and the rest at the halfway point. i do not yet have a testimony of gu. i will keep trying though. i think next time i'll try a different brand. (i used the GU brand this time). that's about all... have a good rest of the weekend!

mellow and yellow
I have struggled this week with this bad cold, I never made up for one missed run - but today was ok. I ran 4 miles this morning with some major hills. I didn't even look at the time so I have no idea how I did. I had to stop a couple of times to blow my nose, it's kind of hard to breath when you're all stuffed up so I had to get out that thick yellow "gu"(hey, we talk about poo and periods, I figure we can handle snot). The weather was grey and misty and a little chilly, actually kind of nice and mellow in a different sort of way.
Today's top music pics were "With Love" by Hillary Duff ,"Get Me Bodied" by Beyonce, ("A little sweat never hurt nobody!"), and "This Love", by Maroon 5. Have a great weekend!
